Lok Sabha adjourned due to protests on US deportations

Lok Sabha adjourned till 12 amid protests over deportation of Indians from US

The Parliament Budget Session 2025 was disrupted on Thursday due to protests by opposition parties over the deportation of more than 100 Indians from the United States. Congress submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, demanding a discussion on the issue. The Opposition raised concerns about the treatment of deported Indians, calling it inhumane and humiliating.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha started proceedings at 11 AM but had to be adjourned till 12 PM due to loud protests. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha stated that this matter should be handled between the Indian and US governments and should not disrupt the Question Hour. However, opposition leaders insisted that the government clarify its stand on the issue.

Opposition Leaders raise concerns

Congress MP Manish Tewari expressed deep sorrow over the way deported Indians were treated. He questioned whether proper legal procedures were followed in the US before deportation. He was particularly upset that deportees were reportedly handcuffed and forced to eat with their hands while shackled. Congress MP Manickam Tagore also criticized the treatment, calling it painful and humiliating. He urged the government to strongly condemn it and demand a statement from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Several MPs from Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) submitted notices in both Houses to suspend regular business and discuss the issue. Congress MP KC Venugopal pointed out that this crisis highlights the need for better policies to prevent illegal migration and protect Indians abroad.

On Wednesday, a US military aircraft brought 104 deported Indians to Amritsar. This was the first batch of deportations under the new Trump administration. The opposition is demanding that the Indian government take stronger action to ensure the dignity and rights of deported citizens.
